Two New Jersey-Area Auto Shops Face Demands Over 90-Year-Old’s Acura NSX

The New Jersey Auto Owners Association has publicly called on two local auto businesses — Polykup and Ultimate Car Care in Fair Lawn — to immediately release a classic Acura NSX belonging to a 90-year-old stroke survivor. According to the consumer advocacy group, the vehicle was originally taken to Samuel Polyak’s Polykup for a premium Tesla battery electric vehicle conversion. The association cites eyewitness testimony from Pavel Bankouski, who worked with Polyak, alleging that salvaged Chevy Bolt batteries sourced from a junkyard were installed instead of the contracted materials.

Chevy Bolt batteries were subject to a major recall by General Motors involving roughly 177,000 vehicles over potential fire risks linked to battery defects. The NJAOA stated that an experienced EV conversion specialist would likely have been aware of these documented safety concerns.

When issues developed with the project, the NSX was reportedly transferred to David C. Gutwill’s Ultimate Car Care shop in Fair Lawn. The association says Gutwill has refused repeated requests to return the car to its owner.

The group also noted that a background check on Gutwill revealed prior convictions that include fraud, witness tampering, and money laundering. It expressed concern about the overall handling of the vehicle by both businesses.

The New Jersey Auto Owners Association issued the following demands:

  • Immediate and unconditional release of the Acura NSX to its 90-year-old owner.

  • Full transparency regarding the work performed and all materials used.

  • Compliance by Polykup and Ultimate Car Care with the terms of the original agreement.

“New Jersey car owners deserve trustworthy repair shops that use agreed-upon parts, complete work on time, and respect consumer rights — especially when dealing with elderly and vulnerable residents,” the association stated.

The group is asking anyone with information about this situation or similar experiences involving Polykup or Ultimate Car Care to contact the New Jersey Auto Owners Association. It also directed people to the group’s website for more details or to offer support.

The New Jersey Center for Investigative Reporting plans to conduct an in-depth review of this matter in the coming weeks.
